(20PCS) 2N5457 JFET N-CH GP 10MA TO-92

Works great for preamp I built.

I'm an amateur electronics hobbyist, primarily playing with LEDs (hey, you connect them right and they get shiny, so they easily distract me, okay? Heh heh). Lately I've been trying my hand at circuits that involve more than a handful of 5mm LEDs and two 1.5v batteries, and I needed these for a few projects.I finished one project already: I breadboarded a "Ruby Guitar Amplifier" circuit. The diagram I used called for a J201 FET but I couldn't find any around, so I sprang for this, as multiple sources claimed these 2N5457 JFETs would work.Happy to say that they do work, and since I'm a noob, it took me a few tries to correctly wire the amp's circuit so it worked correctly. During those attempts I randomly used a few different transistors from this 20 piece bag, and none of the transistors failed or were faulty. I'll quickly note that I didn't blow any components nor were any of them faulty. Nearly all of my errors were misaligned connections to breadboard holes.So while I can't review these as thoroughly as a journeyman or heavily experienced hobbyist could, I think these transistors are good quality and I'm confident most if not all 20 pieces will work just fine.

The batch I received was properly packaged and all 20 jfets work consistently (not good for my application). The data sheet states a Vgs of -.5V - -6V, I was hoping out of 20 to get at least a few in the 2+ range. All 20 tested at around -.3V making them pretty useless for a guitar preamp as they clip (overdrive) from just the guitar signal.That said, they still have their place in other applications, and the seller is not to blame, as all the fets did work consistently, were properly packaged and delivered quickly. If lesser jfets are acceptable for your application, this is a great price. But if you need higher quality, spend the money and get them from a reputable electronics store.

Works as expected- project turned out even better than I was expecting

All of these jets work fine, but they are way out of spec. It wasn't until I found some good ones from another supplier that I realized just how "off" these really are. Not the sellers fault. They were packaged perfectly and got to me extremely quick.

Good for DIY audio applications, VCA.

These look fake, but do measure (Vgs and Idss) just in spec. Picture on the left is from a trusted source (but sold out) whereas on the right, the screen printing is not as good, and legs are made of a thinner wire I'm using them in a Ruby lm386 guitar amp project for my son. They work as intended as an input buffer, but sounds brighter than the "trusted" source.

Not much to say, so far so good, no issues.
