Awesome. They still make the Silent Monster!
It doesn't have the battery tester button on the back, like the original one that gave up the ghost after 30 years of service at home, in the bar for Friday Seminar, and camp on the Lochsa River in Idaho, and once on the Boston Commons when my chess partner (and much-loved mentor) presented a paper at MIT (Tubes Embedded in Semi-Riemannian Manifolds, where I did the easy part (symbolic programming in Macsyma) and he did the heavy lifting (differential geometry). But it's the same "silent monster" in every other respect. Simply the best chess clock for speed chess. You can bang on it for decades and it just does its thing. I'm so glad this product is still on the market, essentially unchanged, 30 years later!

It's huge
Just wanted to let you know, this clock is enormous. It's the biggest chess clock I've ever seen. One reviewer pointed out that the well for the battery is deap, and she's right--Marianas Trench deap--but I was able to pull out the battery easily enough. It will fit into many of the oversized chess bags running around today, but then again, so will a mid-sized Buick.Seriously, this is a great clock. It works well. It's easy to read (from 500 yards because it's so freakishly large) and it's easy to set and operate. Overall, I'm very pleased.

Does what it's supposed to.
Have only used this for a handful of games so far, but it works fine. Although the brand is Wood Expressions, the entire clock is plastic. The buttons are substantial enough for whole-palm slams. It has enough weight to stay put on a tabletop. The faces and sweeping second hand are large and very easy to read. The clock movement does make a very slight ticking sound. I cannot hear it when the clock is to the side of a chess board on a table top.The only improvement I can think of is if there were a button to reset the second hand (like a stopwatch). The only way to do it is to wait for the hand to sweep around to the 12 o'clock position and then either start the other timer, or to press the plunger halfway down to stop both clocks. If you goof and do it too late, you have to wait for it to sweep around again. This reset method, and the clock not being made of wood, are what kept me from giving it five stars. The minute hand can be wound with a dial on the back, like a normal clock. There are even little indicators on the clock face to ensure the minute hands are aligned in perfect sync at 12 o'clock.Overall, a good value for the price.

The Perfect Gift
My husband has been talking about getting a chess clock for quite a while now, so I surprised him with one for our anniversary. He was thrilled and we immediately put it to use. It is easy to operate and works great. Although, I lost I recommend buying this if you're into chess or want to get one for the avid chess player in your life. It's well worth it!

It works OK
Why are chess clocks so expensive? They look like alarm clocks and function like stop watches, both of which are vastly cheaper. I don't get it. There seems to be enough competition, ie enough market pressure to lower the price. Anyway, this clock is somehow the least expensive at around $30. It works OK, thus the three stars. The battery compartment is on the back and opens sorta easily, so if you hit the buttons too hard during play the compartment will pop open and battery will fly out like a projectile! Lol! It was actually pretty funny, but this can be remedied with a piece of tape so it doesn't screw up your game. This particular clock has no aural indicator that the time is up, so you have to just look at it and notice when the little red flipper thing has dropped down. This confused my girlfriend and she ended up losing because of it (she usually beats me ;)

simple; accurate, easy to operate, easy to read; nice product
precise, simple, analog chess timer works as advertised; no frills easy to operate (easy to read/reset) and kept clean and dry should provide many hours of service. Either left or right "clock" can be 'set' and used as a desk clock too!

Great item
We received the chess timer and have been using it playing chess with 3 grandsons! They boys enjoy it and use it. I would recommend this item for anyone starting out learning chess and those wanting to improve their game. Good service.

Don't go near this cheap thing
What a mistake this was getting this unit. I if didn't already know how to use a chess clock I'd be lost the way the directions are written. They read like someone used a phrase book to translate. The clock itself isn't much better. First off, unlike better quality clocks this one has no bell to signal the time running out. One must watch for the drop of the little flag. If they really did go to the expense of making this thing quartz timed, which I seriously doubt, it would only cost a few pennies more to put in a bell. Next up, this clock is obviously made in some overseas sweat shop, the cheap construction of this unit really gives it away. No where in the description does it say made in "wherever" but if you research Royal Crest Wood Expressions you'll be lead to Gardena, Ca. I doubt this clock was ever within 1000 miles of Gardena. Overpriced, misleading, and NOT a good buy. If you are serious about getting a good one, I suggest finding a brick a mortar place that carries chess clocks and get it there. That way you won't stuck with something that's crap. Personally I don't understand the 5 star reviews of this thing at all, I'd bet they are either employees or paid reviews. The only thing this clock is really good for is a chess display in an unused bedroom.

Decent for the money
I bought this clock for a local school. The clock is good value for the money and I would recommend it. My rating of this clock is in comparison to two other clocks I own, one of which in fairness costs considerably more money. You get what you pay for, but I would buy this again because it really is very good value. The hands are large and easy to read, its battery powered so no winding mechanism to fail. It seems a tad fragile and likely wouldn't survive too many falls or rough treatment, and the buttons have poor tactile feel and must be deliberately pressed at times to ensure that they have engaged. A worthwhile product for schools or clubs on a budget (which is almost every one I know).
